Description
V.Large EXHIBITED Oil Portrait Painting By John Opie RA (1761 -1807) for TLC This is a truly magnificent and monumental original early 19th-century Oil on Canvas Portrait depicting Donna Mencia Escaping from the Cavern of the Banditti. Painted by the highly collectable Royal Academy-listed British artist John Opie RA (1761–1807), this exceptional work is a dramatic and theatrical composition that beautifully demonstrates Opie's mastery of portraiture and historical narrative. The elegantly attired Donna Mencia is portrayed at the moment of her daring escape from the bandits' cavern, her expression conveying both determination and apprehension. Richly painted with Opie's characteristic confidence and superb handling of light and shadow, the composition possesses a commanding presence befitting one of Britain's foremost artists of the Georgian period. This remarkable painting benefits from outstanding provenance, having been exhibited at the Harvard Art Museum as part of the prestigious 1930 exhibition: "Eighteenth Century English Painting: In Honour of Professor Chauncey B. Tinker of Yale University." Reference: Fogg Museum, May 5–May 19, 1930. Exhibition Records (HR 6), Folder 739, Harvard Art Museums Archive, Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts. Adding further to its authenticity and historical importance, the reverse of the painting retains a board signed by the artist and secured with three original wax seals. It also bears an embossed exhibition label recording its loan by the renowned Robert C. Vose Galleries of Boston, Massachusetts—one of America's most respected historic fine art dealerships. The painting is presented within a magnificent, oversized decorative giltwood frame, which complements the grandeur of the composition perfectly. It is an impressive museum-quality work, ready to become the centrepiece of a distinguished private collection or period interior. This is an exceptionally rare opportunity to acquire a major work by one of Britain's finest Royal Academy painters, complete with distinguished exhibition history, documented provenance, and outstanding decorative appeal. Attributes: Oil on canvas Circa: 1800-1805 Condition: Both the painting and the huge gesso-moulded frame are offered in overall good condition. There is a vertical canvas crease/split running the length of the surface - see images. ^^ Fast & Free UK Delivery Included^^ *A Certificate of Authenticity (COA) will be provided by artsonline with this piece* Delivery Artsonline UK ships worldwide daily, using only fully insured, priority, and fully tracked delivery services.
