The composition combines the peaceful agricultural character of the valley with the grandeur of the surrounding fells. A farmer and cattle occupy the foreground while a winding route carries the eye through woodland and open countryside towards the distant mountains. Hogley's palette is dominated by warm ochres, earthy browns and varied greens, illuminated by areas of golden sunlight. These colours contrast with softer blue-grey and violet tones across the distant fells. The artist varies his brushwork effectively throughout, using more descriptive strokes around the foreground figure, cattle and vegetation and broader, softer handling as the landscape recedes. Rich greens, ochres, browns and russet tones establish the foreground, where cattle and their attendant introduce movement and scale. The handling becomes broader through the valley before dissolving into cooler, softer passages across the distant mountains. The clouded sky is painted with loose sweeping strokes, while selectively placed golden light brings warmth to the countryside below. The substantial fell in the distance may possibly represent **Glaramara or part of the Glaramara massif**. The identification is intentionally qualified, as the precise historic viewpoint has not been established. Borrowdale Borrowdale has long been celebrated for its wooded valleys, waterways, pasture and dramatic mountain scenery and became an important destination for nineteenth-century artists. Hogley's treatment emphasises both sides of its character: the intimate pastoral world of the farmer and cattle and the much greater scale of the Cumberland fells beyond. The Artist Stephen Enoch Hogley was born in Almondbury, Yorkshire, in 1842. He was apprenticed to Peace Sykes and studied drawing at the Holmfirth Mechanics' Institution before further study at Huddersfield. He specialised principally in landscape painting in oils and watercolours, frequently incorporating cattle, lakes and mountainous scenery. Hogley was associated with the Yorkshire Union of Artists and served on its council from 1895. His works were also exhibited at Manchester City Art Gallery and the Royal Society of British Artists. G. Rowney & Co., London The reverse bears a G. Rowney & Co., London stamp associated with the canvas. Rowney was an established British artists' materials supplier.
