Top Summary
Refined late-Victorian cabinet-scale sporting portrait by Colin Graeme (British, fl.1858–1910). Half-length paired study of a Gordon Setter and an Irish Red & White Setter set in Highland moorland; oil on original Winsor & Newton prepared board, signed and framed.
Full Description
A distinguished late-Victorian sporting portrait, circa 1880, by Colin Graeme. This intimate cabinet-scale work presents a paired study of a Gordon Setter and an Irish Red & White Setter, shown half-length and in profile against a Scottish Highland moorland. Executed in oil on an original Winsor & Newton prepared board, the painting demonstrates Graeme’s economy of composition and refined technique: a warm mid-tone ground, translucent glazing to model form, directional brushwork to describe coat and feathering, and selective impasto to enliven the eyes and muzzle. The restricted view concentrates expression and working temperament, while the atmospheric moorland — foreground heather and distant hills — situates the subjects in authentic upland shooting country. Signed lower corner: “Colin Graeme.” The verso retains a Winsor & Newton prepared-panel label consistent with late-19th-century manufacture.
