(1831–1909)** depicting *Sgùrr nan Gillean, Skye*, one of the most recognisable mountain subjects of the northern Cuillin. Beattie-Brown constructs the scene through a richly observed foreground of substantial boulders, scattered stones and rough Highland vegetation. Beyond, the terrain recedes towards the cooler mountain forms beneath an extensive sky filled with shifting cloud and intermittent light. The work is particularly interesting because it retains several elements of documentary history. The signature **W. Beattie-Brown A.R.S.A.** supports a probable date between 1871 and 1884, while an historic **Anthony Woodd Gallery Ltd., Edinburgh** label identifies the subject and records gallery stock number **B2881**. Beattie-Brown gives particular attention to the substantial rocks and boulders occupying the foreground.
