A good Victorian table is arguably one of the most versatile pieces of furniture one can purchase. Unlike Georgian tables which were often delicate, the Victorians were proud of their curves and revelled in thick solid legs and good solid table tops that you would not be scared to dance on top of. Today Victorian tables give a lovely decorative flair to our otherwise pared back homes. The best tables at the time were usually made of Mahogany which were finished in a deep French polish finish to show off the graining to its full potential. However, they were also happy using other exotic woods from around the Empire for their best tables such as Satinwood and Rosewood. On the other end of the scale the humble Victorian Oak and Pine Kitchen tables have also become firm favourite in most households today for their practicality and character.
When looking for Victorian tables it is not important to purchase examples only from known famous companies of the time because most makers made good quality items but remained unmarked. Like the Georgians before them, the Victorians liked each of their tables to have clear uses such as breakfast tables, card tables, library tables, Pembroke tables and more. Although multi-use today each type of table would have its own look and key features that still make them unique and appealing today.
