Description A commanding antique British royal portrait depicting King William III of England, Scotland and Ireland, dating from the early 18th century and painted after the established portraiture of Sir Godfrey Kneller. William is shown bust-length within an oval composition. His distinctive pale features are framed by a long, dark allonge periwig characteristic of late Stuart court fashion. The King wears sumptuous royal state robes. An elaborate falling lace cravat is positioned above a richly patterned golden-brown mantle edged or lined with ermine. Across his shoulders is the ceremonial Collar of the Order of the Garter. Its red roses and decorative gold knots culminate in the suspended Great George, depicting Saint George on horseback slaying the dragon. The combination of lace, ermine, patterned textiles and Garter insignia creates an imposing visual statement of monarchy, chivalric authority and the splendour of the late Stuart court. Sir Godfrey Kneller: Sir Godfrey Kneller was the pre-eminent portrait painter of the late Stuart and early Georgian courts. Born Gottfried Kniller in Lübeck, he settled in England during the 1670s and enjoyed extensive royal and aristocratic patronage, ultimately becoming Principal Painter to the Crown. Kneller portrayed a succession of British monarchs, including Charles II, James II, William III and Mary II, Queen Anne and George I. Demand for official royal portraits resulted in successful Kneller compositions being repeated and adapted by his studio, followers and later British painters. King William III William III was born at The Hague in 1650, the son of William II, Prince of Orange, and Mary, Princess Royal, daughter of King Charles I. Following the Glorious Revolution of 1688, William and his wife Mary II accepted the English throne and were crowned joint sovereigns in 1689. Following Mary's death in 1694, William continued to reign alone until his death in 1702. Royal portraiture played an important role in communicating William's dynastic legitimacy and sovereign authority. His depiction in state robes and the insignia of the Order of the Garter therefore carried considerable ceremonial and political significance. The Order of the Garter: Founded by King Edward III during the 14th century, the Order of the Garter is Britain's oldest and most senior order of chivalry. Exhibition History: The Famous Lord Hill Museum — privately loaned and exhibited during late July 2026. Professional Conservation: The portrait was professionally examined and conserved in 2026 by Vanessa Andrew M.A., Fine Art Conservator. Examination established that the oil painting had been historically lined onto a coarse-weave secondary canvas. An extensive crack pattern was recorded, including raised cracking associated with the historic lining. Areas of previous overpainting were identified, particularly within the dark background. UV fluorescence examination formed part of the professional assessment. Conservation treatment completed in July 2026 included surface cleaning, selective removal of the removable upper varnish layer, removal of small paint deposits, filling of localised losses, application of conservation varnish, sympathetic retouching and securing of the canvas turnover edge to the strainer. An older, substantially discoloured varnish layer was considered difficult or impracticable to remove safely and was deliberately retained following professional evaluation. Professional conservation documentation accompanies the painting, including a Condition Report, Treatment Report and photographic conservation record.
