The elaborate gold Collar of Esses and Tudor rose pendant form particularly distinctive features. The strong contrast between the dark ground, warm red costume, pale fur and gold chain gives the portrait significant visual presence. Its substantial scale makes it particularly effective for a study, library, entrance hall or traditional interior. Sir Thomas More and Hans Holbein Thomas More was a lawyer, humanist, writer and statesman who served as Lord Chancellor under Henry VIII. He was the author of Utopia and was executed in 1535. Hans Holbein the Younger's celebrated 1527 portrait established More's enduring visual image. The present work is a much later interpretation of this established portrait tradition.
