Description
This is an antique figural woodblock print. A Japanese, framed late-Meiji period picture after Yamamato Shōun, dating to the Edwardian period, circa 1910.
Regarded as a bridge artist between the Ukiyo-e and Shin-Hanga style, the late Meiji era work of Yamamato Shōun (1870 - 1965) moved to a more Western-influenced process, rather than the Edo period woodblock craft. Featuring romanticised Edo-inspired fashions rather than the contemporary Meiji clothing, his bijinga period (pictures of beautiful women) was his focus before moving to traditional brush painting known as Nihonga in the Showa period.
Title: 'Reading' (Dokusho) - from the series Fashions of Today (Ima sugata).
Delightful woodblock portrait in a charming mid-century frame, that displays a desirable aged patina and in good order. Presented behind clear, bright glass with a silk cotton border. Frame dressed with a hanging bracket for ease of mounting
Printed upon authentic kozo paper, with the ink sitting deeply within the nap and fibres. Shows the woman reading at a low table, in a long gown and holding a fan. The table is known as a tsukue whilst the fan is an ōgi or sensu. Artist's character mark and title to the left corner, along with the official red seal.
This is a superb antique figural woodblock print, offering a charming example of late Meiji period artwork, presented in a tasteful 1950s period frame. A treat for the collector of Japanese art or decorative purpose. Delivered ready to display.
