Catalogued as Circle of Sir John Gilbert RA (1817–1897), this atmospheric Victorian equestrian painting reflects the 19th-century fascination with medieval chivalry, Renaissance pageantry and romantic historical subjects. The central nobleman wears polished fluted armour and an elaborate feathered plume. He is mounted upon a powerfully modelled piebald charger fitted with decorative ceremonial tack. Two mounted guards emerge from the shadowed Gothic archway behind him, creating a convincing sense of procession, movement and anticipation. Silver-grey highlights across the armour contrast beautifully with the warm ochres, siennas and deep umbers of the ancient stone architecture. The chestnut colouring of the attendant’s horse adds further warmth and balance to the composition. The painting is presented in a substantial traditional gilt moulded frame with a protective glass front. An older brass attribution plaque engraved Sir John Gilbert RSA is attached to the frame. Gilbert correctly used the designation RA rather than RSA, so the plaque is regarded as a later collector’s attribution rather than documentary evidence of authorship.
