Subject portrait of the known British aristocrat landowner Sir Philip Grey Egerton 15th Baronet. He is in hald length front profile view, wearing his red evening hunting dinner jacket, with a white bow tie & a white pocket square. Also with a smart white shirt, he is wearing his glasses & has a light grey moustache, bald head with side hair. He is facing the viewer with a slight smile on his face in a happy mood. Monogram signed by the British school artist F.E, follower in the style of Herbert James Gunn. In our opinion this is a rather fine portrait example. Set in the original gilt wood frame, with hanging thread on the back ready for immediate home display, which enhances this work further. Biography of Sir Philip Reginald le Belward Grey Egerton, 14th Baronet 3rd September 1885 – 9 June 1962) was an English landowner. His life He was the son of Colonel Caledon Philip Grey Egerton and Caroline Blanche, daughter of Rev. Reginald Southwell Smith. His father was commanding officer of 39th Regional District of the Raj, and a Colonel of the Dorset Regiment. He was born at Tenantrees, West Stafford in 1885. The Egerton, later Grey Egerton, later still Egerton baronetcy, of Egerton and Oulton in the county of Chester, is a title in the Baronetage of England held by the senior patrilineal branch of the Egerton family. One of the earliest English baronetcies created, Sir Roland Egerton left many male descendants in remainder to his title. Sir Philip was a soldier commissioned into the Territorial Army of the Royal Artillery. He was with the Sudan Civil Service; and with the 3rd battalion of Shropshire Light Infantry won a 4th clasp of the Order of the Nile. In 1941 he was appointed High Sheriff of Cheshire. The 13th baronet, Rev Sir Brooke, who adopted the added surname Grey-Egerton, died childless, without an heir on 5 November 1945. As his nearest male relative, a second cousin, Sir Philip was the next in line. In 1947 he was appointed Honorary Colonel of 521 Long Range Artillery Regiment. His family he married in 1916, Dorothy Aveys. She was elder twin daughter of Brigadier John Henry Balguy, Ra, of Duffield, Brockhampton, Dorset by his first wife, Mary, daughter of William Smith Nicholson of Eastmore, Yarmouth, Isle of Wight. They had two sons and a daughter: Sir Philip John Caledon Grey Egerton, 15th Baronet (born 1920). Brian Balguy Le Belward (born 1925).Mary Blanche Aveys; married on 1 August 1939 Vincent Ackroyd Palliser Costabadie Frcs Ed, Doms (died 14 February 1959). His first wife died on 26 April 1952, his second marriage was on 11 October 1961 to Kathleen, widow of Brian Thorburn Dickson, and daughter of Peter Crook, of Borwick Lodge, Ambleside. Sir Philip later inherited and moved to Oulton Park in Cheshire, but returned to Dorset living in Stafford House, West Stafford, and died in 1962 he was succeeded by his son and heir. Biography of Herbert James Gunn was a Scottish painter who was born in 1893. His works have been exhibited & sold at auction houses around the world the highest sold price being for $122,250 Us Dollars, Sir Herbert James Gunn RA RP (30 June 1893– 30 December 1964) was a Scottish landscape and portrait painter. His Early life Sir Herbert James Gunn (also known as Sir James Gunn) was born in Glasgow on 30 June 1893, the son of Richard Gunn, a draper, and Thomasina Munro. He studied for several years at the Glasgow School of Art and the Edinburgh College of Art. In 1911, he went to the Académie Julian in Paris where he studied under Jean-Paul Laurens. Condition report, offered in fine used condition. The front painting surface is in very good overall order with foxing staining & craquelure in areas commensurate with usage & age, canvas is original unlined. The frame has had some minor repairs paint touch ups, with signs of wear, scuffs, scratches, stains, dust, minor losses in places commensurate with usage and age.
