Her brunette hair is centrally parted and arranged in elongated side ringlets. The luminous white costume contrasts strongly with the deep red-maroon shawl. An unusual oval classical-profile ornament attached to the sleeve provides an intriguing period detail. The painting has subsequently been proposed as possibly depicting Sarah (Sara) Losh, the Cumbrian architect, designer, antiquarian and landowner associated with Wreay. The face is softly and comparatively smoothly modelled, with carefully articulated blue-grey eyes. The white dress and rich shawl create the principal areas of light and colour. The Cameo Sleeve Ornament The oval ornament at the sleeve appears to contain a pale classical profile against a darker ground and is consistent with a cameo or cameo-like medallion. The identity of the profile and any personal significance remain unknown. The Possible Sitter — Sarah (Sara) Losh Sarah Losh was an accomplished Cumbrian architect, designer, antiquarian and landowner. Her architectural activity around Wreay included work during the 1830s, followed by her celebrated St Mary's Church in 1840–42. No inscription or continuous Losh-family provenance presently establishes that the woman in this portrait is Sarah Losh. Losh would have been approximately 45–54 during 1830–1839, whereas the sitter is represented comparatively youthfully. The identification is therefore retained cautiously as a possible research attribution. The Artist — In the Manner of James Lonsdale James Lonsdale was born in Lancaster in 1777 and became a prolific British portrait painter. He studied briefly under George Romney before entering the Royal Academy Schools and remained professionally active through the late 1830s. The present portrait's smooth facial modelling, restrained composition and dark background invite comparison with his portrait tradition.
