George V Sterling Silver Cigarette Case by Joseph Gloster Ltd

An attractive George V sterling silver cigarette or card case, hallmarked Birmingham 1929, of elegant rectangular form with finely executed engine-turned decoration. Made by Joseph Gloster Ltd, a Birmingham silversmithing firm associated with the Lion Silver Works, Hockley Hill, Birmingham. The exterior features an intricate repeating geometric pattern, complemented by a vacant rectangular cartouche, making this a particularly pleasing example of late 1920s silver craftsmanship. The case opens to reveal its original silver-gilt interior, retaining the two metal retaining clips, stamped PATENT No. 1001, designed to hold cigarettes securely in place. The case has a shaped thumbpiece and a hinged opening, with its compact proportions making it equally suitable for use as a visiting card case or as an attractive decorative desk accessory.
