Description
A beautifully engraved Victorian sterling silver cigarette case by the renowned Birmingham silversmith George Unite, hallmarked 1878, and presented in a handsome fitted case.
Of rectangular form with softly rounded corners, the case is richly decorated with intricate floral and foliate scroll engraving, incorporating delicate birds amongst the flowering branches. The finely worked decoration surrounds a central vacant circular cartouche, framed by a decorative border, giving the piece an elegant and particularly appealing appearance.
The interior retains its attractive original gilded finish, together with two blue elastic retaining straps, providing a striking contrast to the polished silver exterior.
The case bears clear English silver hallmarks, including the maker's mark GU for George Unite, the Birmingham anchor, lion passant for sterling silver and the date letter for 1878.
A particularly attractive feature is its fitted presentation case, finished in black with a deep burgundy-coloured interior. This enhances its appeal both as a collector's piece and as a decorative accessory for a gentleman's desk or study.
George Unite was an established Birmingham silversmith whose workshop produced a wide range of finely crafted silver goods during the Victorian period.
An elegant example of late Victorian silverwork, combining intricate engraving, quality craftsmanship and the added appeal of its fitted presentation case.
