George V Sterling Silver Cigarette Case with Bird & Floral Engraving

An attractive and finely engraved George V sterling silver cigarette case dating to 1927, bearing the maker's mark T.W.M, probably for Thomas William Martin. Of rectangular form with gently curved sides, the case is beautifully decorated with an elaborate combination of floral scrollwork, finely engraved borders and a charming central scene depicting two birds in flight amongst flowering branches and foliage. The interior retains its original gilded finish, together with the elastic retaining straps, adding to its period character. The case bears a full set of English silver hallmarks comprising the maker's initials T.W.M, Birmingham anchor, lion passant for sterling silver and the date letter C for 1927 Additionally stamped REGD DESIGN No. 730965, identifying a registered design. A particularly decorative example of late 1920s English silverwork, with considerably more character than the conventional engine-turned cigarette cases of the period.
