James Shoolbred, Anglo Japanese Occasional Table, Circa 1880

In General -Rare Arts and Crafts Anglo-Japanese “Pagoda” table, circa 1880. -Made from walnut with a distinctive elongated octagonal top. -Produced by the renowned London furniture manufacturer James Shoolbred & Co. -Attributed to acclaimed designer Henry William Batley (1842–1932). -Batley specialised in Japanese-inspired furniture and decorative design. -Raised on square, tapering splayed legs. -Features elegant rod galleries and a practical lower tier. -Retains its original London label, stamp and serial number. -A striking example of the Anglo-Japanese style, combining British craftsmanship with Japanese design influences. -Batley designed furniture, textiles, carpets, wallpapers and complete decorative schemes for leading British manufacturers. -His work was exhibited internationally in Philadelphia in 1876, Paris in 1878 and Chicago in 1893. -James Shoolbred & Co was established during the 1820s on Tottenham Court Road, London. -The company became celebrated for its high-quality furniture and opened one of London’s earliest large department stores, Tottenham House. -Awarded a Royal Warrant during the mid-1880s, reflecting the exceptional quality and design of its furniture. -A highly decorative and historically important example of British Aesthetic Movement and Arts and Crafts design. -Dimensions - please see below. Maker Attributed to H W Batley and made by James "Jas" Shoolbred, London, W1 Mark Label on the underside "James Shoolbred & Co Tottenham House Tottenham Court Road London". Also stamped "Jas Shoolbred" & Co" and serial number "6711" Year Circa 1880 Material Walnut Condition In excellent antique condition with no chips or cracks. One of the lower rear stretchers is missing although it is not obviously noticeable. The table top has been refinished to a high standard by an expert in James Shoolbred furniture restoration.
