Waterloo Banquet at Apsley House, 18 June 1836 -Magnificent, rare and impressively detailed original Victorian line engraving and hard to find identification  key depicting The Waterloo Banquet at Apsley House on 18 June 1836. -Engraved by William Greatbach (1802–1885) after the celebrated monumental painting by William Salter (1804–1875). -Most unusually, the engraving is accompanied by its separately framed identification key, illustrating the composition in outline and listing the individual sitters. -The survival of this scarce key makes the ensemble considerably more complete and desirable, as comparable engravings are almost always offered without it. -Presented in a beautiful bird’s-eye maple more contemporary frame with gilt slip, together with its scarce separately framed more contemporary identification key. -Depicts the annual dinner hosted by Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington, at his home, Apsley House, to commemorate the Allied victory at the Battle of Waterloo. -Wellington stands prominently towards the centre-right, apparently addressing or proposing a toast to the distinguished officers and veterans gathered around the long dining table in the Waterloo Gallery. -Wellington is flanked by both His Majesty King William IV and His Majesty the King of Holland. Unusually both Kings physically attended the banquet. King William IV passed away a year later in 1837.   -Although nominally recording the 1836 banquet, Salter’s composition unusually includes several veterans who had attended earlier dinners but had died before that date. -Incorporates an extraordinary 84 individual portraits of senior military officers, Waterloo veterans and notable guests. -The sumptuous interior of Apsley House is meticulously recorded, including Old Master paintings, elaborate furnishings, silver tableware and military trophies. -Discarded swords, plumed helmets and other items of ceremonial equipment fill the foreground. -Greatbach reportedly devoted several years to translating Salter’s complex group portrait into engraved form. -Exceptionally fine lines, cross-hatching and tonal contrasts demonstrate the considerable scale and technical ambition of the undertaking. =The full-sized edition was published in London by Sir Francis Graham Moon of 20 Threadneedle Street on 18 June 1846—the thirty-first anniversary of the Battle of Waterloo. -Printed by William Benjamin McQueen, a prominent nineteenth-century London intaglio and lithographic printer. -The lower margin bears the engraved title, The Waterloo Banquet at Apsley House, June 18th 1836, together with the names of Salter, Greatbach and the publisher. -The engraving measures approximately length of 112 cm and height of 70cm excluding the frame. Condition -The main engraving retains strong detail but displays noticeable overall toning and age-related discolouration. There are water marks along the bottom of the engraving. There is a tear in the engraving across one of the main masterpiece paintings. -There are vertical creases, old folds or joins across the sheet, together with scattered marks and possible historic repairs. -The engraving appears to have been laid or backed onto fabric. -The identification key is considerably faded and displays pronounced fold lines, creasing, staining and surface wear. -The beautiful 'birds-eye' Maple more contemporary frame is in good order whilst the key's more contemporary frame has age-related knocks, losses and rubbing.
