Attributed to Isaac Findler (1809–1888)
Daniel in the Lions' Den
Signed and Dated 1881
Victorian Biblical Narrative Oil on Canvas
Description
A compelling Victorian biblical narrative oil painting on canvas depicting the celebrated Old Testament story of *Daniel in the Lions' Den*, traditionally attributed to the Staffordshire artist Isaac Findler (1809–1888).
Dated 1881, the composition portrays Daniel seated calmly upon a rocky outcrop within a shadowy wilderness landscape, surrounded by lions yet remaining unharmed through divine protection. Clad in a vivid crimson robe, Daniel gazes heavenward in prayer and contemplation, conveying a profound sense of faith, devotion and spiritual resilience.
The artist has created a dramatic and atmospheric composition in which the illuminated figure of Daniel emerges from a predominantly dark setting. The strong contrast between light and shadow draws the viewer's attention immediately towards the central figure while enhancing the narrative tension inherent within the biblical account. Rich in symbolism and religious significance, the painting combines devotional character with considerable decorative appeal.
Composition & Technique
The composition demonstrates a thoughtful understanding of narrative painting, with Daniel positioned centrally and surrounded by lions that create both visual balance and dramatic tension. The restrained palette of deep browns, warm earth tones and rich blacks allows the striking crimson robe to dominate the composition, reinforcing Daniel's spiritual importance within the scene.
Particular attention has been given to Daniel's facial expression, which conveys calm contemplation despite the perilous circumstances surrounding him. Strong chiaroscuro modelling creates depth and atmosphere throughout the painting, while the dark landscape backdrop heightens the sense of isolation and divine intervention.
The work displays many characteristics associated with Victorian provincial religious painting, where storytelling, emotion and moral narrative were often given precedence over strict academic convention. The result is a powerful interpretation of one of the Bible's most enduring narratives.
Historical Context
The story of Daniel in the Lions' Den originates from the Book of Daniel in the Old Testament and remains one of the most powerful symbols of faith and perseverance within Christian tradition.
According to scripture, Daniel was condemned to the lions' den after refusing to abandon his devotion to God. Through divine intervention, the lions did not harm him and he emerged unharmed. The episode became a lasting symbol of unwavering faith, courage in adversity and ultimate spiritual triumph.
During the nineteenth century, biblical paintings enjoyed widespread popularity throughout Britain. Religious subjects were frequently displayed in private homes, schools, chapels and public institutions, serving both decorative and educational purposes. The subject of Daniel in the Lions' Den was particularly admired for its dramatic visual possibilities and inspirational message.
Today, Victorian religious paintings continue to attract collectors who appreciate their narrative power, symbolism and historical connection to nineteenth-century culture and belief.
About the Artist
Isaac Findler was born in 1809 and lived in the Staffordshire village of Cheddleton, near Leek. Although employed professionally as a house painter and decorator, he developed a local reputation as a talented artist producing landscapes, religious subjects and sign painting.
It is believed that Findler devoted increasing attention to painting after his son assumed responsibility for the family decorating business during the late 1860s. He subsequently became known throughout the region for his distinctive and often highly individual artistic style.
In 1874 he held a public exhibition of his work in Leek, and examples of his paintings remain preserved in regional museum collections. Of particular relevance, Staffordshire County Museum holds an earlier depiction of *Daniel Surrounded by Lions* painted by Findler in 1846, demonstrating the artist's longstanding interest in this biblical subject.
The present work, dated 1881, would therefore represent a mature example executed during the latter years of his artistic career.
