Murano Sommerso Beak Vase -amber Over Ruby Red & Clear Casing

A striking and highly sculptural Mid-Century Sommerso art glass beak vase, dating to the 1960s, expertly formed in rich ruby red glass encased within a vibrant amber layer and finished with a substantial clear crystal casing. Standing an impressive 260 mm (26 cm) high, this elegant organic form beautifully captures the modernist aesthetic that defined Italian art glass of the period. The vase features the classic "beak" or pulled-spout form, with fluid asymmetrical lines that create an ever-changing profile from every angle. The Sommerso ("submerged") technique—where successive layers of coloured glass are encased in clear crystal—creates exceptional depth and luminosity, allowing the colours to glow as light passes through the thick glass. This demanding technique became one of Murano's defining innovations during the mid-20th century. Although unsigned, the form and colour combination closely resemble examples produced by leading Murano glass houses during the 1950s and 1960s, including pieces often attributed to designers such as Flavio Poli and Seguso. The vase is substantial in weight, beautifully balanced, and displays wonderfully whether viewed alone or as part of a collection of Mid-Century Modern decorative glass.
