Description
Antique Oil Royal Portrait c.1840 - The Lost Heir Henry Frederick, Prince of Wales in Armour with the Order of the Garter British School after Isaac Oliver, Oil on Metal Panel Subject & Medium:- This finely executed 19th-century portrait depicts Henry Frederick, Prince of Wales (1594–1612), eldest son of King James I, shown at the age of sixteen. He is presented in ceremonial armour, richly detailed with gilt accents, and wearing the badge of the Order of the Garter, England’s highest chivalric honour. Painted in oil on metal panel, a durable medium popular with 19th-century historicist artists, the portrait is housed in a museum-quality gilt frame designed to complement its noble subject. Composition & Technique:- Based on Isaac Oliver’s celebrated likeness of the young prince, the composition follows the three-quarter bust portrait format. A dark ground heightens the figure’s presence, pushing him forward with dramatic clarity. Colour & detail highlights:- Deep blacks and browns in the background for sober contrast Silver-grey armour enriched with shimmering gilt details Crisp white lace ruff shaded with greys and creams for texture Warm naturalistic flesh tones, enlivened by soft blush to the cheeks The vivid blue riband and crimson-gold badge of the Order of the Garter The artist combines miniaturist precision in the lace and insignia with broader modelling in armour and flesh, achieving a balance of accuracy and Victorian revivalist flair. Historical Significance:- Henry Frederick was admired across Europe for his charisma, intellect, and promise as heir to the throne. His sudden death from fever in 1612, aged only eighteen, shocked the nation. The crown passed to his younger brother, Charles I, whose reign led to civil war and eventual execution. This portrait, painted after Oliver’s original likeness, stands as a moving commemoration of the Stuart heir who never reigned. Artist & Period:- British School, c.1840, after Isaac Oliver (1565–1617) Oliver, French-born and trained in England under Nicholas Hilliard, became one of the most accomplished portrait miniaturists of the Elizabethan and Jacobean courts. Victorian “after” paintings such as this were prized by collectors fascinated with Tudor and Stuart dynastic history. Key Features:- Captures a pivotal “what if” in English history Detailed ceremonial armour and lace ruff Compact yet commanding size: 27 × 24.5 cm framed Museum-standard reframing with Larson-Juhl gilt moulding and AR70 anti-reflective glass Provenance:- Private collection (vendor) Sold through established northen notable auctioneers (since the 1840s) Curated by Cheshire Antiques Consultant LTD Exhibited at the Famous Lord Hill Museum, among notable English historical portraits Dimensions:- Framed size: 27cm × 24.5cm × 2cm Significance:- More than decorative art, this work is a historical commemoration of England’s most poignant “what if.” A fine example of Victorian historicist portraiture, it preserves the image of a brilliant heir whose premature death altered the fate of the Stuart dynasty.
