Description
Racing Pigeon Trophy Portrait Oil Painting c.1930, Inscribed Holley Bros., “Old Badge Hen & Champion Cock” — In the Manner of Andrew Beer
Description
A rare and highly decorative British racing pigeon trophy portrait, oil on board, circa 1930, presented in its original carved wood frame. Depicting two celebrated birds—“Old Badge Hen” and a Champion Cock—this work is richly hand-inscribed with ownership, race placings, pool wins and breeding notes for Messrs Holley Brothers, including the headline result “1st Whitley Bay 1909.” More than a picture, it functions as a period sporting record: part trophy, part certificate, and part pedigree document.
The birds are arranged in a classic commemorative format beneath a pale, clouded sky: the hen shown in profile on lower ground, and the cock elevated on a rocky outcrop in proud “trophy” stance. Executed in an emblematic, direct style with strong clarity of form and careful plumage detail, the painting sits firmly within the Northern British pigeon-portrait tradition and is offered in the manner of Andrew Beer, whose celebrated works similarly combine bold bird portraiture with documentary inscriptions and prize histories.
Old Badge Hen is honoured as a foundation breeding hen, inscribed as dam and grand-dam of multiple winners (including notable placings from Perth, Buxton and Craven Arms). The Champion Cock carries a full résumé of performances and pool wins, with further placings recorded (including Tynemouth and Perth) and a notable long-distance achievement associated with Banff-to-Trehafod racing—an evocative glimpse into the golden age of British pigeon sport.
