Description
The Faithful Companions - A Trio of Cocker Spaniels in the Manner of Maud Alice Earl (1863–1943) - Mid 20th Century oil on canvas laid on board subject & medium A finely composed mid 20th Century oil painting depicting three Cocker Spaniels in an intimate tiered head study. Executed on unstretched, stiffened canvas laid on board, the work focuses entirely on expression and presence, drawing the viewer into close proximity with the dogs. This cabinet-scale canine portrait exemplifies the enduring British tradition of sporting and domestic dog painting. Composition & Technique: The composition follows a classic pyramidal arrangement, providing visual harmony and structural balance. Each spaniel subtly overlaps the next, creating depth while maintaining clarity and cohesion. The palette is warm and richly layered. Deep chestnut and burnished mahogany tones define the coats, enhanced with honeyed highlights that convey the natural sheen of well-kept feathering. Gentle tonal gradation across the muzzles - from soft caramel to deeper shadow - creates refined modelling without heaviness. A restrained cool grey-blue background acts as a tonal counterpoint, heightening luminosity and preventing visual density. Brushwork is controlled and precise: fine directional strokes articulate the flowing ears, while smooth blending defines rounded skulls and expressive brows. Carefully placed highlights in the eyes lend lifelike depth and emotional resonance. Expression & Character: Each spaniel displays distinct personality. The upper dog appears alert and observant, with a steady, intelligent gaze. The lower left spaniel leans slightly forward, its softened expression conveying warmth and devotion. The lower right dog presents a more contemplative presence, with deeper shadowing suggesting calm assurance. Together, the trio conveys quiet companionship — sincere, affectionate, and dignified rather than sentimental. The Cocker Spaniel in British Art: Originally bred as a skilled sporting companion, the Cocker Spaniel became one of Britain’s most beloved domestic breeds by the mid-20th century. Its expressive eyes, flowing ears, and loyal temperament made it a favourite subject among canine portraitists. Spaniel head studies such as this celebrate both the sporting heritage and emotional bond associated with the breed, a tradition deeply embedded in British animal painting. Attribution: Attributed to Dorothy Alexandra Johnson (1902–1988), born in Nottingham and trained at the Nottingham School of Art under Arthur Spooner, a respected animal painter. From the 1930s onward she specialised in canine portraiture, particularly spaniels and other popular breeds. The painting is further described as in the manner of Maud Alice Earl, reflecting the refined compositional elegance and dignified head-study tradition associated with Earl’s celebrated Victorian spaniel portraits. Attribution is based on stylistic handling, subject matter, scale, and period alignment. No visible signature. A signature may lie beneath the frame rebate. Frame: Presented in a period gilt moulded frame consistent with the 1950s–1960s. The warm gilded tones complement the rich chestnut colouring of the spaniels and enhance the painting’s decorative appeal. It is ready to hang. An appealing cabinet-scale work ideal for studies, hallways, country interiors, or curated sporting art collections. Provenance: The Woodland Elf, Goole, East Riding of Yorkshire Acquired from June Kilvington, Private Collection, East Riding of Yorkshire, Privately exhibited at the Famous Lord Hill Museum, 5th-6th March 2025.
