Clifford Bayly RWS (b.1927): Watercolour "The Gazebo, Sissinghurst Castle"

A corner of the famous garden of Vita Sackville West at Sissinghurst Castle in Kent, featuring the Gazebo which adjoins the original moat and the shaded "moat walk". The Gazebo was built in 1969 in honour of Harold Nicholson, Vita's husband. Signed by the artist lower right. Label of Nevill Gallery, Canterbury verso. Clifford Bayly was a painter and illustrator who studied at St Martins and Camberwell Schools of Art and later taught at various art schools in Kent before retiring early to concentrate on painting. He became vice-President of RWS and President of Weald of Kent Art Group. He exhibited at Royal Society Summer Exhibitions and at Piccadilly and Mall Galleries and also Australia, where he also painted.
