Introduction
A characterful early 20th-century British sporting portrait depicting a prized lurcher standing alert within an atmospheric English country landscape.
Painted in oil on canvas and signed “J. Warnes” lower right, the work is provisionally dated to circa 1910.
The dog is presented almost in full side profile upon a rural pathway, its head turned towards the viewer with an engaging direct gaze. Its chestnut and creamy-white coat contrasts beautifully against tall summer grasses, distant golden fields and a softly clouded blue-grey sky.
The composition belongs to the established tradition of late Victorian and Edwardian British sporting animal painting and is presented in the tradition of Samuel John Carter. This is an art-historical contextual description and not an attribution to Carter.

Offered in fine used antique condition.
The canvas displays age-related craquelure together with yellowing and discolouration to the existing varnish.
Scattered pale surface spotting and accretions are present. Historic localised paint retouching and small repairs to the reverse of the canvas are reported.
The later decorative gilt frame displays minor imperfections and wear consistent with its construction and use.
