Warnes c.1910 Early 20th Century Oil On Canvas Of A Prized Country Dog In An English Landscape Highlights Fine British sporting animal portrait, circa 1910. Signed “J. Warnes” lower right. Oil on canvas. Chestnut-and-white lurcher standing within an English rural landscape. In the tradition of British animal painter Samuel John Carter (1835–1892). G. Rowney & Co., London, “Quality F” prepared-canvas stencil verso. Provenance associated with Lime House, Earls Colne, Essex. Introduction A characterful early 20th-century British sporting portrait depicting a prized lurcher standing alert within an atmospheric English country landscape. The composition belongs to the established tradition of late Victorian and Edwardian British sporting animal painting and is presented in the tradition of Samuel John Carter.
