Description
Mid-Century Murano Art Glass Vase – Bullicante Technique (controlled bubbles), Attributed to Seguso (Italy, c.1960s–1970s). This striking mid-century Murano art glass vase is a superb example of Italian studio craftsmanship, combining sculptural form with refined glassmaking techniques. Hand-blown on the island of Murano, near Venice, the piece displays the artistry and innovation that made Murano glass internationally celebrated during the post-war period. The vase features an elegant freeform silhouette with a gently twisted body that rises into a dramatic, flared rim. The rim has been skilfully pulled into soft, flame-like points, giving the piece a dynamic, organic presence. Its coloration transitions beautifully from a rich ruby red core into warm amber tones, encased in clear glass—an effect closely associated with the Sommerso technique, where layers of colour are submerged within crystal-clear glass. A defining feature of this vase is the use of the bullicante technique, visible as controlled, evenly spaced air bubbles suspended within the glass. This method, perfected by Murano masters in the mid-20th century, requires exceptional precision and is a hallmark of high-quality studio production. The base retains a ground and polished pontil mark, confirming its hand-blown origin and careful finishing. This detail distinguishes it from mass-produced glass and supports its attribution to a skilled Murano workshop. Based on its form, colour palette, and technical execution, the vase can be confidently attributed to the Seguso workshop, most likely produced under the direction of Archimede Seguso during the 1960s–1970s. While unsigned—as is common for many export pieces of the period—it closely aligns with known Seguso designs from this era.
