Description
Overview A distinguished Georgian naval portrait: oil on canvas, half-length, depicting Captain Sir Gamaliel Nightingale in formal Royal Navy uniform. Attributed to John Simmons the Younger (Nailsea, 1715–1780) on stylistic and provenance grounds. Presented in a period-appropriate giltwood frame. This work combines documented naval service, aristocratic lineage and public sale provenance — strong cross-appeal for maritime, military and country-house collectors. Attribution & Artist Attributed to John Simmons the Younger. Attribution supported by stylistic comparison (flesh modelling, treatment of fabric and metallic highlights), Bonhams catalogue reference and a Bonhams lot label on the verso. Simmons worked in the West Country producing provincial portraits of gentry and naval officers in the mid-18th century. Technical testing (XRF, UV, IR) is available to buyers who require further verification. The Sitter — Captain Sir Gamaliel Nightingale (1731–1791) Named sitter with verifiable service in the Royal Navy. Educated at the Royal Naval Academy (entered 1744), Nightingale held independent frigate commands and is recorded capturing a French privateer (13 March 1761). Associated with Nightingale Island (Tristan da Cunha group), charted/observed during his South Atlantic service, giving the portrait additional geographic significance. Provenance & Documentation Public sale: Bonhams, London — Old Master & British Paintings, February 2024 (Lot 9). Catalogued as from a private European collection since at least c.1990. Verso retains the Bonhams lot label. Archival links include Cambridgeshire estate records (Chesterton Terrier, 1768) tying the sitter to Kneesworth Hall and local land transactions. Condition Report (summary) Canvas: stable; historic, even craquelure consistent with mid-18th century dating. Paint surface: generally sound with sympathetic historic retouching; no significant modern overpaint. Varnish: aged varnish layer present; professional cleaning recommended for chroma recovery. Frame: substantial giltwood surround with acanthus and egg-and-dart motif; surface wear and small gilt losses consistent with age but structurally sound. Full condition report, UV and raking light photography available on request. Frame & Presentation Period giltwood frame typical of late-Georgian / early-Regency taste; warm gold tone complements the palette and suits both historic interiors and contemporary display. Dimensions Canvas: approx. 76.7 cm (H) × 63.6 cm (W) Framed: approx. 92.75 cm (H) × 79.0 cm (W) × 5.5 cm (D) Why this work matters (sales pitch for collectors) Named Royal Navy officer with documented commands and naval action. Baronetcy lineage and Kneesworth Hall estate association. Geographic legacy via Nightingale Island. Publicly recorded sale at Bonhams (Feb 2024), enhancing market provenance. Strong appeal to maritime, military, genealogical and Georgian portrait collectors. Purchase & Documentation High-resolution image pack, Bonhams catalogue extract and verso label images, and full written condition report provided to serious buyers. Technical testing can be arranged prior to sale subject to agreement.
