Original Pencil Sketch by Alméry Lobel-Riche ( known as Lobel-Riche, 1877–1950)
"Une Courtisane" Circa 1910
Sketch is approx 24cm by 17.5cm
Frame is approx 45.5cm by 38cm
A finely executed early 20th Century pencil drawing on paper by the celebrated French illustrator and engraver Lobel-Riche, best known for his elegant yet provocative depictions of Parisian life.
The artwork presents a sensual interior scene: a standing female nude "Courtisane" seen from behind, lifts a draped cloth from her shoulders as she faces an older, well dressed gentleman reclining in an armchair. The composition is rich with narrative tension Lobel-Riche’s hallmark blend of intimacy, theatre and slightly mischievous humour.
Rendered in confident, fluid graphite lines, the sketch captures the soft modelling of the figure, the relaxed pose of the seated man, and the atmospheric detailing of the room, including a mantelpiece with decorative objects. The artist’s signature appears in the lower right corner.
The drawing is mounted within a double cream mount and presented in a simple gilt frame from about 1970's, giving it a refined, gallery ready presence. The frame shows agerelated wear with imperfections but displays well overall.
A charming and characteristic original example of Lobel-Riche’s work, combining his mastery of line with his eye for the human drama of Belle Époque and interwar Paris.
