Description
🌟 Regency Miniature Portrait of Lady Scott (Alicia Anne Spottiswoode), c.1827 Circle of William Douglas, RSA (1780–1832), Edinburgh Subject & Medium This exquisite portrait miniature depicts Lady Scott (Alicia Anne Spottiswoode, 1810–1900), painted around 1827 when she was about 17 years old. Shown in a soft cream and pale rose gown trimmed with ruffles, she is draped in an ermine-edged cloak. Pearls crown her hair, encircle her neck, and a delicate miniature pendant rests on her breast — all emblems of her status within Scottish aristocracy. Executed in watercolour with fine gouache highlights on panel, the portrait captures porcelain-like skin, sparkling jewels, and luminous fabrics with remarkable finesse. Composition & Technique 🎨 Lady Scott is depicted three-quarter facing, with a serene, direct gaze. A cool bluish-green background sets off her fair complexion and refined attire. Skin tones: Warm peach and rose washes, stippled with precision. Hair: Rich chestnut ringlets with golden highlights, entwined with pearls. Jewelry: Pearls touched with bright white bodycolour; gold clasp subtly picked out. Cloak: Ermine detailed in soft greys and creams, contrasting with the smooth gown. Background: Green-blue wash characteristic of Edinburgh miniatures of the 1820s. The interplay of delicate pastels and sharp highlights reflects the mastery of Scotland’s leading professional miniaturists. About the Sitter 👑 Alicia Anne Spottiswoode (1810–1900) later became Lady Scott of Ancrum upon her marriage in 1836 to Sir William Scott, 6th Baronet. Renowned not only for her beauty but also her artistry, she composed songs and ballads deeply rooted in Scottish tradition. Her works were widely performed in Victorian society, placing her at the cultural forefront of 19th-century Scotland. Closely connected to the illustrious Scott family of Abbotsford — descendants of Sir Walter Scott — Lady Scott bridged the Regency, early Victorian, and late 19th-century cultural worlds over her remarkable 90-year life. The Artist ✒️ Circle of William Douglas, RSA (1780–1832). Douglas was Edinburgh’s foremost miniature painter, appointed in 1817 as Miniature Painter in Scotland to Princess Charlotte and Prince Leopold. Known for his “tasteful and delicate execution,” he was the choice of many leading Scottish families. This portrait shares key stylistic features with Douglas’s works: luminous porcelain flesh tones, jewel highlights in bodycolour, and the signature blue-green ground. Though unsigned, the sitter’s identity is confirmed by a period inscription on the reverse. Framed Presentation 🖼️ Original gilt-metal oval frame with suspension loop Early marbled paper backing inscribed “Lady Scott” in a period hand Dimensions (framed): 11.5 cm (with loop) × 7.6 cm × 0.6 cm Provenance 📜 Acquired through a respected Northern Shire dealer Later curated and catalogued by Cheshire Antiques Consultant LTD Reverse inscription aligns sitter with Lady Scott of Ancrum Why Collect This Piece ❤️ ✅ Portrait of a notable Scottish aristocrat, composer, and cultural patron ✅ Stylistically linked to William Douglas, RSA ✅ Harmonious Regency colour palette of cream, rose, chestnut, and soft green-blue ✅ Preserved in its original gilt frame with authentic backing ✅ Rare survival of early 19th-century Scottish miniature portraiture
