Rare French antique (late 19thC) wood sculpture, ‘The Fencer’ (L’Escrimeur) by René-Charles Masse (1855-1913). Superbly observed and carved, this is a rare wooden sculpture (the épée is metal) by Masse – his works are more commonly in bronze or spelter – who was noted for his fencing statues. 62cm high x 18cm wide x 18cm deep, weight 2.4kg. Superb craftsmanship in lovely original condition. The best wood carving I have had the pleasure to offer for sale. A masterpiece.
