Atmospheric Yorkshire Landscape by Gilbert Wiper

British, mid-20th century, probably circa 1960s Oil on canvas, signed lower left An atmospheric mid-century landscape by British painter Gilbert Wiper, depicting the remote upland village of Greenhow, near Pateley Bridge in North Yorkshire. Beneath an expansive Yorkshire sky, a solitary group of buildings sits against the long, subdued contours of the surrounding moorland. Wiper gives much of the composition over to the weather above them, working in broad passages of grey, cream, muted blue and soft mauve. Against this restrained backdrop, the farmhouse emerges in warmer tones of ochre and umber, its whitewashed walls picked out with remarkably economical strokes. The surface is wonderfully painterly. Wiper worked with both brush and palette knife, and here passages of thick impasto give the foreground and architecture an almost sculptural quality. Rooflines, chimneys and windows are suggested through confident applications of pigment rather than precise architectural detail, while the enormous sky is handled much more loosely. The result captures the exposed character of the landscape particularly well. Born in Glasgow in 1936, Gilbert Wiper initially worked as a civil engineer before pursuing painting professionally. He studied under Irish landscape painter Kenneth Webb and exhibited in London from at least the late 1960s, including at the Royal Society of British Artists' Summer Exhibition in 1968. His recorded work is particularly associated with landscape painting, with dated examples from County Down known from as early as 1965. While Irish landscapes appear with some regularity within Wiper's recorded oeuvre, Yorkshire subjects appear considerably less frequently. The identification of this particular landscape is fortunately preserved on the original stretcher, which is inscribed in pencil "GREENHOW Nr PATELEY BRIDGE YORKS". Greenhow lies high above Nidderdale, a few miles west of Pateley Bridge, in a landscape historically shaped by lead mining and characterised by exposed moorland. Wiper's emphasis on the vast, changeable sky and comparatively diminutive buildings feels particularly suited to this isolated setting. Presented in a substantial decorative swept frame with a beautifully aged, distressed gilt and painted surface. The frame has acquired losses, rubbing and cracking over time, all of which contribute considerably to its character. The painting remains in good decorative condition for its age, with craquelure and areas of surface wear commensurate with its age and heavily worked surface. There is a small historic puncture to the canvas within the sky and further minor signs of age and use. Please refer to the photographs for a full visual assessment of condition.
