Make a big statement, impress your clients and guests by adding a touch of historical British aviation battle history to your office and home wall space with this masterpiece.
Title “RAF Pilots Ready for Takeoff at Airfield Standing by Hawker Hurricanes P3059 Battle Of Britain 1940 Dog Still Waiting for His Master” by Simon Smith.
Oil on canvas.
Subject military aviation airfield Biggin Hill in Kent during Ww2 Battle of Britain during the late summer in 1940. Three Royal Airforce pilots are standing by a Hawker Hurricane P3059. Two are dressed flight ready wearing yellow life jackets over their uniforms ready to scramble in a moment’s notice, the third man is standing confidently with legs spread apart, he has a cigarette in his hand. Two of them are looking towards the laying Rottweiler dog who is focused still waiting eagerly for his master’s return from his sortie that he is currently on during the battle, the third pilot who has a moustache is also looking in the same direction as the dog is looking. Just further back on the plane you can see two German flag symbols in view, which shows that this particular Hurricane plane has two confirmed credited German plane shot down kills. The cockpit is visible with slide hatch presently open. The low cut grass is golden yellow, further back you can view other aircraft planes positioned neatly for takeoff. In the distance green trees and bush foliage. Above mainly clear blue sky with some scattered cloud cover.
Signed near the bottom corner by the well known military artist Simon Smith.
Circa late 20th century.
Set in a rather decorative gilt frame which enhances this painting further.
An impressive display size with the frame being 113 cm wide and 77 cm high.
In our opinion this is his finest work.
Artist biography: Simon Smith, a known aviation and military artist was born during the mid 20th century in the year 1960. He grew up in Hampshire in the military town of Aldershot. His father was in the army, Simon was brought up in a military environment and he loved learning about the past especially famous battles in history. He pursued art at School and took an A level in Fine Art before he was 16 which was rather impressive. He studied Fine Art along with Illustration at Farnham and Reigate Art Schools. When he passed with a first class degree he began a career with commercial illustration for the world of marketing advertising and also with books. In his spare time he started to paint famous battles along with aviation. His works were so well adored that he was then elected a full member of the Guild of Aviation Artists. He also loved to meet war veterans from Ww2.
Notable awards: Simon won the Guild’s Nockolds trophy on several occasions along with winning the Cross & Cockade Ww1 Aviation Art Award, also the Flypast Magazine Award for Excellence in Aviation Art.
The Battle of Britain (German: Luftschlacht um England, "air battle for England") was a military campaign of the Second World War, in which the Royal Air Force (RAF) and the Fleet Air Arm (Faa) of the Royal Navy defended the United Kingdom (UK) against large-scale attacks by Germany's air force, the Luftwaffe. It was the first major military campaign fought entirely by air forces. The British officially recognise the battle's duration as being from 10 July until 31 October 1940. The primary objective of the German forces was to compel Britain to agree to a negotiated peace settlement.
Germany's failure to destroy Britain's air defences to force an armistice (or even an outright surrender) was the first major German defeat in the Second World War and a crucial turning point in the conflict. The Battle of Britain takes its name from the speech given by Prime Minister Winston Churchill to the House of Commons on 18 June: "What General Weygand called the 'Battle of France' is over. I expect that the Battle of Britain is about to begin.”
Highly sought after due to the collectible nature of the historic military subject matter.
