Description
English Victorian sporting oil painting of a Purebred Arabian horse in the Bombay Stables, India, circa 1900 An attractive English Victorian sporting oil painting depicting a magnificent Purebred Red Chestnut Arabian horse standing proudly within the famous Bombay Stables, India (modern-day Mumbai). Executed circa 1900, this beautifully observed equestrian portrait is painted in the manner of the celebrated British sporting artist Charles Bilger Spalding (1810–1871). Painted in oil on board, the composition portrays the Arabian horse standing in elegant full side profile beneath a pale green canvas awning, erected to provide shade from the Indian sun. Beyond the stable yard, the calm waters of Bombay Harbour extend into the distance where a sailing yacht can be seen crossing the estuary, creating a wonderfully atmospheric colonial setting. The artist has captured the horse with exceptional attention to detail, carefully modelling its powerful musculature, elegant proportions and distinctive Arabian features. Rich chestnut tones contrast beautifully against the soft greens and gentle blues of the surrounding landscape, creating a balanced composition full of warmth, character and timeless decorative appeal. During the nineteenth century, Arabian horses were among the most valuable and admired bloodlines throughout the British Empire. Bombay became an important centre for racing, breeding and military horsemanship, making sporting portraits such as this highly desirable commissions that celebrated prized horses owned by officers, merchants and distinguished patrons. This work is attributed to an English School artist working around 1900 and painted in the manner of Charles Bilger Spalding, whose celebrated sporting paintings and horse portraits remain highly sought after by collectors of Victorian art. His works were exhibited at the Royal Academy and continue to achieve strong results at auction. Presented in its traditional gilt frame, this painting is ready to hang and would make an elegant addition to a country house, library, study, office or refined home interior. It will particularly appeal to collectors of Victorian sporting art, equestrian paintings, Anglo-Indian works, Arabian horse portraits and British antique oil paintings. Provenance Original labels remain attached to the reverse. • Holloway's Auctioneers, Banbury, Oxfordshire, Lot 97, June 2024. • Original typed collection label reading: "Chestnut Arab in the Bombay Stables Bought from the Anneji And sold for £980." • Southern Shire Fine Art Auction label. • Curated by Cheshire Antiques Consultant LTD. These original labels accompany the painting and provide an appealing documented ownership history. Measurements Height: 13.6 inches (34.5 cm) Width: 16.5 inches (42 cm) Depth: 1.8 inches (4.5 cm) A timeless collector's piece This charming Victorian sporting painting combines English equestrian art with the rich history of colonial India, making it a wonderful decorative and collectable work. Whether displayed as a focal point in a traditional interior or added to an established collection of sporting paintings, it offers both historical interest and enduring visual appeal. It is an excellent opportunity to acquire an authentic late Victorian oil painting celebrating one of the world's most admired horse breeds.
