The Edwardian period was a transition between the old ways of the 19th Century and the new that would emerge after WW1. Edwardian chairs follow this same outlook with some remaining good quality copies of earlier Georgian and Sheraton design pieces, and others pushing at the boundaries of how a chair should look and be constructed. Here in the UK these more unusual ‘Art Chairs’ followed the flowing organic forms of the Art Nouveau, the simple geometric austerity of the Arts & Crafts movement, or a combination of the two. Europe had their own variations as well. When looking at Edwardian chairs then most were constructed using a combination of machine work and hand crafted techniques and details. Affordable Bentwood chairs also became even more popular as well. This makes chairs from the Edwardian period perfect for everyday use but with a quality you can rely on. Mahogany, Oak, Beech and Walnut remain the most common timbers that were used and it is usual for chairs to be unlabelled by the maker, unless by the largest or best makers. Since the Edwardian era moved away from the ornamental excesses of the Victorian period, chairs from this decade tend to suit our simple modern homes well.
At LoveAntiques we have a large and ever changing selection of Antique Edwardian Chairs for Sale as well as quality Vintage examples which pay homage to that era.
