The Longcase clock was invented in Britain during the mid-1650s by clock maker Ahasuerus Fromenteel and his son. The pendulum mechanism which it employed, took a little while to perfect, but once created ensured very accurate time keeping. From the start these new tall clocks were given an architectural look to the case and the faces were made of brass. As the 18th Century progressed, the wooden cases would become more far ornamented to include Mahogany, Inlay and painted effects. From the 1770s the 1st painted dials began to appear.
The longcase clock would be made in many parts of the world each with slight variations in form, but in Britain production would drop off substantially from the 1870s onwards when cheap US mechanisms began to be imported. By the 20th Century the advent of electric and battery powered clocks made the grandfather clock seem outdated and cumbersome. However, for anyone who collects them they will know that the quality of Antique Longcase clocks deserve to be greatly admired and that each example has the quality personality of its own.
