French Garden Antiques
Getting your garden summer ready need not be a daunting task; you can create a stylish space with little time and minimal effort. Alongside French garden antiques there are a number of rules to adhere to when creating a French feel in your exterior area.
Firstly, a French garden clearly defines different spaces in the garden, so there is a clear area for alfresco dining, and additional areas for other activities, it makes for a graceful transition around the garden.
Secondly, try to incorporate a climbing plant, whether it is against a fence or up against a wall, think honeysuckle, wisteria or climbing roses.
Thirdly, try to blend informal with formal features, when it comes to plants try to stick to geometry in the design, but the garden accessories needn’t match, this is the beauty of the French design. For example borders may be strictly planned and measured but then look perfect with overgrown wild flowers, think of a Monet landscape with colours exploding across the landscape.
Think wrought iron, limestone features and pretty, vintage items, there is a great number of French garden antiques on the market to choose from, so it is possible to suit all your needs. The French are effortlessly chic and these items will help transform your outdoor space into a romantic, tranquil space to enjoy of a summers day and evening.
19th C Barrow/Market Garden Hand Cart
This is the perfect item of garden antique furniture to up-cycle. It is made from pine but has maintained its condition, as it has been predominately stored inside.
It has large red iron and rubber wheels and is easy to move from place to place with its long wooden handle. The cart is fairly shabby, but it would work perfectly as a garden barrow or to display vegetables as part of a market display, however it would equally look lovely painted a duck egg blue and used as a planter for wild flowers, giving your garden a vintage French feel. It is being sold for £225 by Elmgarden Antiques.
Vintage French Garden Chairs
Continuing with the vintage French feel in the garden are these lovely French Garden Chairs in a set of six from the 1950s.
Made from metal they have a slightly distressed look, which only adds to their charm. The chairs are 91cm high, 41 cm wide and 50 cm deep, they would look perfect as part of an antique French garden theme. The chairs are being sold by Eras of Style for £145.

French Style Garden Bench
This French style bench is perfect for additional seating in your garden, but less formal than the bistro chairs, it has a curved wooden slatted seat, which is ideal for relaxing back on and admiring the outdoors.
The bench is supported by the original cast iron work, the wooden slats are not original but are sympathetic to the benches original design. It is 59 inches in width, 31 inches deep and 29 inches high at the back. You can purchase this lovely garden bench for £295 from Martin Barrington Causer, Fine Arts and Interiors.
French Plant Pots
Technically these are French wire baskets but they would look great with a terracotta plant pot in, they feature a detachable hardwood base in good condition, but you could remove these so you are able to water the said plants.
The French wire baskets are Victorian and the wire is slightly shabby and off white, which makes them even prettier. They are lovely and decorative and are being sold by Malcolm Elgin Antiques and cost £175.
Transforming your garden into a French themed outdoor space is easy to achieve with just a few of these antique and vintage garden pieces, allowing you to sit back and enjoy the summer sun in a beautiful, soft and romantic French style area.
