Item of The Week - Victorian Sterling Silver Locket

And here we are again! Awaiting the impending festivities that seem to come around quicker with each passing year. Yes, the Christmas adverts are starting to appear on the television and the radio stations have even started playing Christmas jingles and we've still got 6 full weeks until the big day is even here! But as premature as this may seem, it's never too early to start shopping, so if you want to get yourself organised for Christmas, and if you happen to be on the hunt for a unique gift then we may be able to help you. Our Item of The Week is of the Jewellery variety and could be just what you're looking for.

This beautiful Sterling Silver Locket is a fine antique example of what is a very popular choice of gift at this time of year. Made in the Victorian era this locket opens up and has the ability to house two pictures; it currently displays portrait photos of an unknown Lady and a Gentleman, which of course can be changed. On the exterior we can see a pretty floral design down the front of the locket with both Yellow and Rose Gold plated flowers alternating from top to bottom. These delicate flowers are central to a decorative motif on the front of the locket that runs parallel either side of the flowers. The rear of the locket is free of any engravings, so this means you'd be able to personalise the locket if you so wish. The only markings on the reverse are the hallmarks, which signify that the locket was made in Birmingham in 1881. The Makers mark appears to be 'M & Co' although this is slightly worn.

The locket hangs on a bale loop and measure 6.1cm long (this measurement includes the bale loop). It weighs 22.8 grams, so this is a decent size for a locket. It may not be brand new, but it is in very good antique condition with only light surface scratches, as to be expected for a piece of antique jewellery that is well over 100 years old. So this pretty piece of jewellery is sure to hold plenty of history and more importantly, it's unique; certainly not to be found on the high street!

This Antique locket is for sale from Argentum Antiques & Collectables Ltd for £385.
