This is a very fine early 19th century English School portrait miniature of a young woman wearing a white dress and gold jewellery, set against a warm sienna toned background, painted in watercolour on an organic wafer.
Judging by the style of the hair, dress and jewellery, this miniature dates from the first quarter of the 19th century. It is sadly unsigned but is painted with an assured and highly skilled hand. The face is alive with character and more than a touch of amusement around the mouth and eyes, creating an image of great charm.
The wafer is mounted with what appears to be the original gilt board, within a lightly gilded wooden frame. I suspect that this is the inner part of what was once a more elaborate gilt frame.
The miniature itself is in fine original condition, showing just a couple of minute losses to the top right of the head (see picture 2). There is a little minor rubbing to the gilt board. The frame is sound, but may be missing a more elaborate outer rim.
I have repaired the original backing paper and backing card using minimal intervention and acid free tape, maintaining all original components, and have re-taped the original backing boards to the frame (see picture 6).
