Description

Hogarth drew and engraved this scene in 1752 as the subscription ticket for his treatise The Analysis of Beauty. In 1753 however he cut off the subscription details and amended the wording to "Design'd and Etch'd by Wm Hogarth Decem 1 1753". The print was apparently used subsequently as a frontispiece to The Analysis of Beauty.

The story of Columbus and the Egg is that Columbus challenged two of his enemies to stand and egg upright on the table, which they were unable to do. Columbus then smartly tapped an egg on the table, and it didn't fall over. The application of this story to Hogarth's work is more convoluted, and explained by Paulson in his book Hogarth's Graphic Works, page 156/157.

This copy was printed by Baldwin Cradock and Joy in 1835-1837, as part of their series of Hogarth's work, the last to use the original plates. The edition was issued as prints (ie not in books form) in paper wrappers. The print is of very high quality, on wove paper.

The frame is an original pine frame with black and gilt gesso decoration, often known as a "Hogarth" frame.

A great display piece and original work of art.
