Description

Unusual French salt-glazed stoneware ewer with incised decoration c1850. Of ovoid form with cylindrical neck. Decorated with a stylised acanthus motif and geometric bands. The ewer is on a silver plated base marked for French silversmith Charles Halphen. Incised pattern number to its base together with pottery mark (unfortunately unclear).

The Halphen mark was registered in 1850. In 1853 Charles Halphen entered into partnership with Charles Christofle afterwhich the company traded as 'Alfenide'.

Antique Ethos has clarified that the 19th Century French salt-glazed stoneware ewer (EC197 / LA113013) is genuinely of the period declared with the date/period of manufacture being 1850.

Condition

The ewer is in excellent condition commensurate with age. No chips, cracks or restoration. Please see images as these form an important part of the description.
