Description

A Japanese silvered bronze mirror from the Edo Period (1615 - 1868) decorated in high relief with a central roundel featuring a pair of cranes being fed by a turtle. Young cranes and a turtle play at the bottom of the roundel, below pine trees, bamboo and a chrysanthemum flower. This mirror is believed to have been made during the 1700's.

The mirror was made by the bronze caster 正重 Masashige (probably of the Fujiwara family), who bears the honorary title in the cartouche; 天下 三橋 但馬守 Tenka Mitsuhashi Tanba no kami - the lord of Mitsuhashi Tanba (My thanks to the specialist who translated the Kanji).
