Description

This is a lovely and quite substantial Georgian sterling silver sugar basket made by Hester Bateman and hallmarked in London 1786.

It is in very good condition and retains the original gilding to the interior. Standing on a raised oval base the body is plain apart from banded decoration to the upper and lower rims. There are engraved scrolled initials to both sides and the hallmarks are very clearly struck. The swing handle is firmly fixed and has a reeded decoration.

Hester Bateman was the matriarch of the family and her sons continued the business after her death. Regarded as one of the foremost lady silversmiths of the Georgian period her pieces are widely sought after.
