This ancient carved quartz Buddhist head originates from the historical region of Gandhara, now modern day North West Pakistan/North East Afghanistan. The location on trade routes allowed it to flourish absorbing the diverse cultural influences of Indian and Iranian styles as perfectly displayed in this superb piece of early Buddhist sculture. The carved quartz was carved by a very skilled Gandharan artisan. Buddhism declined rapidly from Gandhara with the Muslim invasions and eventually ceased to exist in the Gandhara region by c1200 A.D.
