Artist Biography: Themistokles von Eckenbrecher (1842-1921) The German landscape and marine painter was born in 1842 in Athens. As the son of a naval officer, he grew up in various locations, including Athens, Berlin, Düsseldorf, Constantinople and Potsdam. In Düsseldorf, he received private lessons in painting from the famous landscape painter Oswald Achenbach, who influenced him greatly. Eckenbrecher travelled to many parts of Europe, especially Norway and the Middle East as well as Africa and the Philippines. All these impressions result in the motifs of his paintings.
