Description
Size: Frame 28.5 x 33.5 cm, print 13.5 x 17 cm Condition: Print in very good condition, some water staining to bottom half. Mount new, frame in good antique condition with some minor losses to veneer. This very interesting and fine print is a copy of the Rembrandt etching, Self Portrait Leaning on a Stone Sill, which is Bartsch 21 in the catalogue raisonee. It is signed in the plate Rembrandt, lower left. The print is accompanied by a note, onto which it was mounted, which is in German and difficult to read. It appears to suggest that the print was purchased from a bookseller in Basel in 1828. The print itself is on chain laid paper (as is the note), and therefore is likely to be 18th century or earlier. The print differs from the orignal Rembrandt etching in a few details, mainly differences in etching lines, but the main one is that the man in Rembrandt's etching wears a cross round his neck which is omitted in this version. In the National Gallery of Scotland there is another copy of this print (accession number P6604), but unfortunately it provides no further information as to the author or date. Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn (1606-1669), was a master painter and draughtsman, but more relevant to this piece is that he was a printmaker and is still considered the greatest etcher in the history of the medium. Lifetime prints of etchings by Rembrandt fetch 5-figure sums. Unsurprisingly, copies of Rembrandt's etchings, usually not conceived as forgeries but more as a homage to the artist, were made by many artists and those of higher quality, such as this one, are very sought after today. The print is in a new mount in a very attractive rosewood frame on the mid 19th century.
