Description
Alexandre-François BONNARDEL (1867-1942)
Elégante à la robe jaune
An exquisite painting of a Belle Époque elégante dating to around 1900. This particular model, the woman in yellow, manifests frequently in his work and appears to have been a particular favourite.
Alexandre François Bonnardel entered the National School of Fine Arts in Lyon on February 23, 1891 in the studio of Antoine Christian Zacharie (1819-1899). He became a pupil of Jean-Baptiste Poncet and exhibited for the first time at the Salon des Beaux-Arts in Lyon where he obtained a first medal in 1899. In 1904 he exhibited at the Paris Salon.
In 1900, he was appointed professor of the live model class at the National School of Fine Arts in Lyon. He resigned in 1918 following the scandal surrounding an affair with one of his students.
