Description
Gentleman's Waltham U.S.A, 'Special Waltham', high grade 11 jewel Antique pocket watch with beautiful ivory porcelain dial in a 10 carat (stamped) rose gold filled (has a lovely soft pink hue and is what is known in the UK as rolled gold) Dennison case. C ~1903. Looks to have been much loved and very well taken care of -her condition certainly reflects this. Full working order and is an excellent timekeeper (within +2/-2 minute per 24 hours) with plenty of room on the regulator (which is sat correctly In the central position) for any further fine tuning. Fully checked and serviced by my highly experienced watchmaker and is guaranteed to be 100% authentic - a timepiece to grace any collection! DIAL;- Impressive and distinctive, high gloss, 'snowflake' white porcelain dial in mint condition - absolutely no marks, hairlines or nibbles. Signed clearly in black fancy script with the retailers name; COVENTRY LEVER Co LTD 41B. NEW ST BIRMINGHAM and signed in black script above the sub dial; SPECIAL WALTHAM. Bold black Roman numerals with black minute markers, bolder black five minute markers and black triangular shaped 15 minute markers to chapter ring. Correct double sunk dial (only used on high jewelled watches) with recessed sub dial containing black Arabic numbers and black seconds chapters. Finely cut, original bright blued steel spade and whip hands and original blued steel arrow tip seconds hand all in lovely straight order. Original thick bevel edge glass (not acrylic) in amazingly clear and bright condition with just two fine little surface scratches commensurate with age. CASE;- The highly polished/very chunky (5cm diameter / 7cm from top of bow to base and 1.3cm depth), 10 carat (stamped) rose gold filled Dennison case is heavy (has a pleasing solid feel in the hand and total watch weight is 105.5 grams), robust and in wonderful condition - absolutely no wear, just two extremely tiny indentations to the back cover (neither detract, so small are not showing up in the photographs but mentioning for accuracy) and few light and fine little overall surface scratches commensurate with age and use in her 118 years service. All covers (both inside and out) still retain their original, high gloss, mirror finish. The front cover is hinged at 6, opens correctly to exactly 90 degrees, closing tightly with a very reassuring click. The back cover and dust cover are again hinged at 6, open to exactly 90 degrees, closing very tightly and all three large hinges are true and firm with absolutely no play. The inside of the back cover is clearly stamped; TRADE MARK A.L.D (Aaron Lufkin Dennison - one of the founding Fathers of the American Waltham Watch Co., who moved to England to establish the Dennison factory. They made cases for all the leading watch manufacturers including Rolex and Omega), ENGLISH MAKE and is numbered; 53821xx. This number is correctly, partially repeated to the inside lip of the front bezel; 821. Clearly stamped to centre with the Dennison trade symbols of a star, crescent moon and sun. Also carries seven old service marks - certainly looks to have been very well maintained. The inside of the dust cover (which has three very light scratches - looks like someone once tested it to see if solid gold) is clearly stamped; ENGLISH MAKE THIS CASE GUARANTEED TO BE MADE FROM TWO PLATES OF 10CT GOLD AND TO WEAR 20 YEARS (the Dennison '20' year cases where always 10ct gold filled). Numbered again; 53821 6 W - the 6 is the Dennison date numbering system 1906 (which shows the movement is original to the case, it should always be dated earlier or the same - never after) and the W is the first letter of the surname of the Goldsmith at the Dennison factory who pinned the case joints, unfortunately on this occasion I have been unable to identify him. MOVEMENT;- The stem wound and set high grade 11 ruby jewelled 3/4 fire gilt plate lever movement (which still retains its original dust ring) is in superb and clean order and has just been checked/serviced by my highly experienced watch maker. Has a compensated balance wheel with brass balance screws and four brass meantime screws (for precision timing), bright blued steel over coil balance spring which is true, in the round (and 'breathing' well), bright blued steel movement screws, ruby jewels in screwed in (blued screws again) sunken chaton settings, ruby end stone in a sunken chaton setting, beautifully engraved balance cock, ruby pallet jewels, attractive engine turned 'swirl' decoration to the mainspring and ratchet barrel covers and steel half cut movement screws. Stamped clearly on the top plates in very fancy arched script; American Waltham, U.S.A., and is numbered; 12122276 - dating her to 1903. This number is correctly partially repeated to the bottom plate (under the dial), underside of the balance cock and to the side of the balance bridge; 122276. Balance action is absolutely tremendous in all positions (could not be any better) and is keeping excellent time with a sure, strong positive action - runs like a train. Winds extremely smoothly and fully (do not be afraid to fully wind, over-winding is the greatest horological myth!) Runs for over 30 hours on a full wind. Hand set operates smoothly and correctly - the pull up/push down action is very firm and true. Lovely large un-worn gold filled 'onion' crown. Good original gold filled bow which has a little bit of wear to top and underside from being carried on a watch chain over the years. APPRAISAL;- A very handsome and highly impressive Gentleman's Antique American timepiece which as mentioned earlier was much loved and proudly cared for by the original owner - she will make a perfect gift and a heirloom to be enjoyed by your future generations! Ready to wear or display. Will be delivered in a new presentation box and be very securely and safely packed. I always have a good selection of antique gold filled watch chains listed and in stock which will compliment this watch well - please contact me if you have any specific requirements. *** WILL SHIP WORLDWIDE *** UK - FREE!
