Description
Antique Gentleman's Swiss 'Vertex' 7 jewel pocket watch with beautiful ivory porcelain dial in a 10 carat (tested) rose gold filled (has a lovely, very soft pink hue and is known in the UK as rolled gold) Dennison half hunter case. C ~1922. Looks to have been much loved and very well taken care of -her condition certainly reflects this. Full working order and is an excellent timekeeper (within +2/-2 minute per 24 hours) with plenty of room on the regulator (which is sat correctly in the central position) for any further fine tuning. Fully checked and serviced by my highly experienced watchmaker and is guaranteed to be 100% authentic - a timepiece to grace any collection! DIAL;- Impressive and distinctive, high gloss, 'snowflake' white porcelain dial in mint condition - absolutely no marks, hairlines or nibbles. Signed clearly in bold black fancy script with the retailers name; ROBERTSON LONDON and signed in black arched script to base of sub dial; SWISS MADE. Bold black Roman numerals with black minute markers and bolder black triangular shaped five minute markers to chapter ring. Large sub dial with black Arabic numbers and black seconds chapters. Finely cut original bright blued steel double spade and whip hands (so allowing for easy time check through the front cover) and original blued steel arrow tip seconds hand all in lovely straight, unmarked order. Original hunter glass (not acrylic) in amazingly clear and bright condition with no damage, scratches or chips and original domed outer glass showing very few light and fine little surface scratches commensurate with age. CASE;- The highly polished (5cm diameter / 7cm from top of bow to base), 10 carat (tested) rose gold filled Dennison case is heavy (has a pleasing solid feel in the hand and total watch weight is 108.6 grams), robust and in wonderful condition - absolutely no wear or indentations and just a few light and fine little overall surface scratches commensurate with age and use in her 99 years service. All covers (both inside and out) still retain their original, high gloss, mirror finish. The front cover is hinged at 9, opens correctly to exactly 90 degrees by depressing the winder, closing tightly with a very reassuring click. Carries bold dark blue (they are more commonly black) enamel Roman numerals with dark blue enamel inner and outer chapter rings - all of which are in amazing condition with no fading or chips. Clearly numbered inside; 674920xx. Both the back cover and dust cover are again hinged at 9, open correctly to exactly 90 degrees, closing tightly and both large hinges are true and firm with absolutely no play (as is the front cover hinge). The inside of the back cover is clearly stamped MOON (the 'Moon' cases where always 10ct gold filled), TRADE MARK A.L.D DENNISON WATCH CASE Co LTD (Aaron Lufkin Dennison - one of the founding Fathers of the American Waltham Watch Co., who moved to England to establish the Dennison factory, they made cases for all the leading watch manufacturers of the era including Rolex and Omega) and carries their trade symbols of a crescent moon, star and sun to centre. Clearly numbered; 674920 and this number is correctly partially repeated to the inner back case cuvette and the underside of the bezel lip; 4920. Also carries two old service marks which are done in the same hand. The inside of the dust cover is clearly stamped; ENGLISH MAKE GUARANTEED TO BE MADE OF TWO PLATES OF 10CT GOLD WITH PLATE OF COMPOSITION BETWEEN AND TO WEAR 20 YEARS and is numbered; 674920 22 M - the 22 is the Dennison date numbering system; 1922 and the M is the first letter of the surname of the Goldsmith at the Dennison factory who pinned the case joints, unfortunately on this occasion I have been unable to identify him. MOVEMENT;- The stem wound and set 7 ruby jewelled, 3/4 fire gilt plate Swiss lever movement is in superb and clean order (tiny specs of age patina to the top plates showing under eyeglass only, do not detract but mentioning for accuracy) and has just been checked/serviced by my highly experienced watch maker. Has a solid bi arm balance wheel with brass balance screws and two brass meantime screws (for precision timing), steel flat balance spring which is true, in the round (and 'breathing' well), ruby end stone in a screwed in chaton setting, ruby pallet jewels, mirror finish mainspring and ratchet barrel covers and original matching steel movement screws. Stamped clearly on the top plates in arched script; SWISS MADE 7 JEWELS and is clearly numbered to the bottom plate (under the dial); 887. Also stamped to the bottom plate within a triangular shaped cartouche; GT - Gedeon Thommen (Established; 1853 Switzerland) who was the founding Father of the Vertex brand. Balance action is absolutely tremendous in all positions (could not be any better) and is keeping excellent time with a sure, strong positive action - runs like a train. Winds extremely smoothly and fully (do not be afraid to fully wind, over-winding is the greatest horological myth!) Hand set operates smoothly (has a little squeak) and correctly - the pull up/push down action is very firm and true. Lovely large un-worn rose gold filled 'onion' crown. Good original un-worn rose gold filled Dennison safety bow which is correctly stamped to one side; DQ (Dennison Quality). APPRAISAL;- A very handsome and highly impressive Gentleman's top grade Swiss timepiece which as mentioned earlier was much loved and proudly cared for by the original owner - she will make a perfect gift and a heirloom to be enjoyed by your future generations! Ready to wear or display. Will be delivered in a new presentation box and be very securely and safely packed.
