Description
This substantial ashtray is a lovely example of craftsmanship of the artisans of the Victorian period.
The cast iron base has been signed with the name of the manufacturer and the location of the factory and from this information it has been possible to date this piece to c 1880. The brass filigree work has been executed to a very high standard and fits on to the base with a precision which is typical of the period.
Its heavy weight would make it ideal for its original use as an ashtray in an outdoor seating area. With its ample ventilation it could also make a very good potpourri container - put the mix in the bottom and add a few dried flowers on top for decoration - or add citronella to the mix and it could be removed to the patio to repel insects. The item would also make an unusual receptacle for a low level flower arrangement - the possibilities are endless.
This versatile item is still a relevant useful item that can be utilised today.
