This extremely rare gothic cast iron mortar dates to the first half of the 16th century during the reign of Henry Vlll (1509-1547). The mortars shape is closely modelled on the continental bronze mortars of the 16th century. This mortar is unusual in being cast in iron rather than bronze. It was most certainly cast in the weald in the south east area of England which was an important centre of the English iron industry in Tudor England, casting iron firebacks, weapons and mortars such as this fine Tudor gothic example. The mortars were used to grind and mix substances such as gunpowder, herbs and also pigments for artists. A very early piece of English cast iron history in Tudor gothic form.
Harvey Evans Antiques has clarified that the c.1540 A.D. Henry Vlll Period Tudor Gothic Cast Iron Mortar (LA329626) is genuinely of the period declared with the date/period of manufacture being c 1540 A.D.
This mortar is in good solid condition with a fantastic patina. Pitting of the iron inside and outside of the mortar. No cracks or breaks.
