Classic and very stylish Art Deco striking Mantle Clock in superb condition for its age, assembled by ‘Anvil’ at the Perivale Clock Manufacturing Company in London. We believe there is an interesting story behind this and similar, Anvil branded clocks of the period… Anvil was a 1934 British registered trading name of Perivale, used to make and sell a portfolio of “executive and premium range” clocks. Between 1934-1939 under the Anvil name, these clocks were produced using quality German-made and fully-assembled movements from Baden in the Black Forest region, (the recognised heart of the German clock and watch making industry). As such these movements become formally known and established as ‘Anvil Baden’ movements, imported from Baden into Perivale’s London factory, where they were partnered with British made cases and other related British made clock parts. However in late 1936, British import legislation on foreign goods and their labelling was tightened by the Government of the day, and in order to help overcome some of those new commercial challenges, Perivale decided to import from Baden only non-branded component movement parts for their Anvil clocks, stamping the backplates “British Made” once said parts had arrived at their London factory ready for assembly! Only Anvil clock backplates were stamped with this legend, the practise lasting until 1939, and commencement of WWII, so this is a scarce example of a fabulous Anvil Art Deco clock. Following on from the above, this clock has an 8-day Anvil Baden mechanical pendulum movement set between two mill finished and lacquered brass plates and housed within a lovely veneered British made Oak case with powerful graining. (On the clocks face, this graining has been creatively and deliberately aligned with two inward butting panels, delivering not only an eye-catching effect, but a pertinent historical reminder that this clock was, and still is, a true ambassador of classical Art Deco design vogue). What makes this clock of further particular interest, is the unique and rarely observed Deco style gold painted cylindrical gong stand and cylindrical solid brass pendulum bob, and from experience, we are highly confident that these are both original components of this clock. (We know that The Bentima Company [owners of Perivale], manufactured and used these components on some of their other company group premium Art Deco clocks, and as company policy allowed, they often interchanged gongs and bobs between their various group companies). The clock also comes with its original Perivale brass winding key (signed “British Made”) and strikes at the half and top of the hour with the number of hours on its gong. The clocks’ dial is again in the definitive Art Deco genre. A rectangular silvered chapter ring with black Roman numerals, laid directly onto the clocks Oak face and finished with chrome Lance style hands secured by a pinned collet. These features are protected by rectangular convex glass mounted in a chrome bezel. All these impressive attributes help to confirm that this wonderful timepiece was not only made DURING the Art Deco period, but made specifically FOR the Art Deco period. A wonderful example of high quality Art Deco design, build and fervour.
