Description
This Doulton Lambeth stoneware jug was by modelled by Eliza (or Elise as she later liked to be called ) Simmance who had a very long and very productive career at Doulton, starting in 1873 and retiring in 1928. All of the decoration on this jug was done by hand. The base is a mine of information-we have the Doulton Lambeth mark, the year of manufacture, Eliza Simmance's monogram and those of her assistants, Edith Bell, Florence Dennis and Eliza Martin. The sterling silver rim is also marked with hallmarks for London 1882, and the silversmiths mark, which is a bit hard to read, but I think it is for John Newton Mappin. The jug stands 198 mm (7.75 inches) high and has a diameter at the base of 123 ( 4 7/8 th inches) mm. It is in excellent condition, with no chips or cracks. Dated 1882.
